Pifferari

Literally "the bagpipers"; From Linda Germi, »Fare musica«, vol. 2 (Torino, 1986 [!]), in which the duo is described as "The pair [consisting of] ciaramella-zampogna that very often occurs during the Christmas festivities, descending from the mountains to the villages and towns, where they go from door to door with their New Year's wishes, and receive, in exchange, gifts (food in villages, and money in towns)"; NB¹: In Il Giornale di Sicilia of 22-23 dicembre 1923 Arnaldo Cervesato writes, in his article "Il Natale nella campagna romana", about a duo consisting of a piffero and a sampogna [sic] that descends, by December 20th, from the Monti Lepini to Rome, to play the Christmas "novenas"; NB²: Arturo Lancellotti refers to the "zampognari, who play the novena [Christmas carol] with their bagpipe and piffero [shawm]"; NB³: ➺ Molise.
