Scialumò (m)
(with) definite article: lomelody pipe, with fingerholes
From Late Latin calamellus, diminutive of Latin "calamus" [reed]; An italianised form of French "chalumeau" [a precursor of the clarinet], mentioned in Pietro Lichtenthal, »Dizionario e bibliografia della musica«, Volume secondo (Milano, M.DCCC.XXVI [1826]), in which it is defined as the chanter of the [Italian] Musetta (NB: ➺ my remarks and sources to that entry); Also mentioned as such in Gianfrancesco Rambelli, »Vocabolario domestico« (Bologna, 1850), who also mentions it, however, as a part of a Cornamusa; François-Joseph Fétis, »La musica accomodata alla intelligenza di tutti« (Torino, 1858) only refers to the "Musetta" again, whereas the term Chalumeau in the 1839 edition of the French original (»La musique mise à la portée de tout le monde…«) is mentioned in connection with the Cornemuse and the Musette.
