Di Fiore, Benedetto

bagpipe maker, also a piper (or vv.) (&c.), mentioned by name

Born in Scapoli (prov. Isernia); He was the founder of a family of pipe makers; Having emigrated to the USA during the 2nd decade of the 20th century, he returned in 1920 to Cannine di Fontecostanza, a fraction of Scapoli; In the 1930s he met several bagpipe makers of Villa Latina (Latium), from whom he learned the construction techniques; His very first Zampogna is on display in the Museo della Zampogna at Scapoli; This highly sought-after tuner and player also left an enormous heritage of knowledge to the "2nd generation" of pipe makers; Among his pupils were his son Ettore, his future son-in-law Luciano Di Fiore [most probably not a relative by birth; ws], and Gerardo Guatieri.
