Gajdzica (f)
single chanter: cylindrical, bent, bell / single reed
Closed fingering; There are 2 chanter types: The most numerous group, with 6 fingerholes, are those of the Gajdy in the Silesian Beskids (Istebna, Jaworzynka, Koniaków, and Hyrczawa [Hrčava (CZ)]); Those of the Żywiec Beskids have 7 fingerholes: 6 in the front, plus a thumbhole; An old Gajdy, on which a 19th century gajdziorz of Hala Boracza [S of Żywiec] used to play, has a gajdzica of the latter type; Józef Maślanka of Hala Boracza builds his instruments after that model; Another instrument with a gajdzica with 7 fingerholes is a Gajdy from Rycerka Górna [SW of Żywiec], the maker of which is unknown; Purchased in 1975 from a Jan Rosseger, the instrument is currently [i.e. 2014; ws] in the collection of the Muzeum Miejskie [Municipal Museum] in Żywiec; According to Katarzyna & Maciej Szymonowiczowie, "this instrument is most probably composed of various elements of Gajdy and Dudy żywieckie. The element most probably transferred from a Dudy to this instrument, is the gajdzica with 7 holes", failing, however, to substantiate this assumption; They add, that "both types of Gajdy [i.e. the Gajdy istebniańskie, and Gajdy śląskie; ws] are found, together with the Dudy żywieckie, in the southwestern part of the Żywiec region", and that "chanters with 6 fingerholes, characteristic for the border area of the Żywiec and Silesian Beskids, were noted in Kamesznica, Szare, Milówka, [and] Cisiec of district Żywiec, and those with 7 fingerholes in Rycerka Górna, Hala Boracza, and Żabnica".
ca. 300 mm (Ø bore: 10-12 mm); According to Katarzyna & Maciej Szymonowiczowie, "the length of the wooden part of the disassembled pipe is 256-310 mm"; Total length, including the przedni rożek and konewka: ca. 740 mm; Ranges: Type 1, in D (district Żywiec): a-d¹-e¹-f♯¹-g¹-a¹-b¹ [and c², executed by Jan Krężelok "Skotniorek" (*1897)], or in E♭: b♭-e♭¹-f¹-g¹-a♭¹-b♭¹-c²; Type 2 (Hala Borcza and Rycerka Górna) in D: a-c♯¹-d¹-e¹-f♯¹-g¹-a¹-b¹ (NB¹: the b¹ sounds when the thumbhole is opened).
