(with) definite article: Cimpoiul (Cimpoĭul)
plural: Cimpoaie; (with) definite article: Cimpoaiele
➺ remark(s) below

Bagpipe, mouth-blown: 2 stocks (a: single chanter / b: drone)

Identical types: 61

From Greek συμφωνία (Symfonia [Latin: Symphonia]); According to Alexandru (1956) the name is used in Oltenia, Muntenia, Dobrogea, Moldavia (RO), Bucovina, in the south-west of Ardeal [Transylvania] and throughout the north-east and south-east of Banat; Spelling in some (mainly French) sources: Cimpoï; NB¹: Baines’ remark that "the instrument is sometimes termed Bulgarian", seems to be based on an unfortunate misinterpretation of the text of the footnote in Alexandru (➺ p.81): "This type of bagpipe is actually identical to the Bulgarian ones, described by R.D. Kacarova..." [which is definitely NOT the same as being called "Bulgarian"; ws]; NB²: Compare his statement (➺ p.80) that "In the light of the information we have at the current stage of research, we distinguish, according to the conformation of the Carabă (chanter), five types of bagpipes, divided into two groups, according to whether the chanter is single (➺ Carabă bulgărească) or double; NB³: ➺ Moldova; NB4: ➺ homonyms.
