Juroszek, Jan

?-? [† ca. 1930]
nickname(s): "Przigóniok" [Driver (of cattle) ?]; In Pilecki spelt "Przigoniok"

maker of bagpipes (&c.) mentioned by name

Probably born in the mid-19th century, he lived in Istebna [S of Wisła], in a place called "u Przigóna"; A talented artist with a high sense of aesthetics, he was a carpenter, who made furniture, and dowry chests, and also a great builder of Gajdy; At the turn of the 20th century he was one of the most famous artists of the "Trójwieś [Triple village] Beskidzka" [i.e. Istebna, Koniaków, and Jaworzynka [triangle S-SSE of Wisła]; ws]; He also played the violin, which is confirmed by archival photographs and a woodcut by Jan Wałach that shows "Przigónioka" as a violinist; Franciszka Kawulok (wife of Jan Kawulok [See below]), who in her youth went to parties where "Przigóniok" played, remembered that "when he drank too much while playing at weddings, he behaved unpredictably. If something did not suit him, he would stop playing and leave. At the end of his life, he sat in the tavern for some days, or even a week, and drank. The only person who was able to persuade Juroszek to leave the pub, was the maid"; According to Jan Kawulok, he died, around 1928, of alcoholism; The most recent photo found, in which "Przigóniok" appears, is said to be of 1929; Because Jan Juroszek’s grave, at the cemetery of Istebna, is liquidated, it is impossible to determine the exact dates of birth and death; According to Pilecki (who spells his nickname "Przigoniok", i.e. without an accent; ws), he is "the best known among the Gajdy makers of pre-World War I and the interbellum", and Katarzyna & Maciej Szymonowiczowie call him "The legendary producer of Gajdy in Istebna", as well as "one of the great deceased builders" (➺ Jan Kawulok "uod Wojtosza", and "stary" Wojtas); A relative of Jan "uod Deja" ?; NB: ➺ Jan Krężelok "Pendyja", Jan Krężelok "Skotniorek", Michał Sikora "Sikorka", Jan Sikora, and Michał Waszut.
