Born in Amble; A talented sportsman, professionally trained solo Highland dancer, and painter of watercolour landscapes, he learned to play the Northumbrian smallpipes from Jack Armstrong, and was appointed, 1971, Piper to the Duke of Northumberland, which he remained until he retired in 1982, succeeded by Richard Butler.
