In 1756 the 1st appointed Piper to the Countess of Northumberland; When the duchy was created, in 1766, he continued as Piper to the Duchess; In 1760 he started to work as an innkeeper, running The Angel Inn, in the centre of Alnwick; His portrait (the earliest of a player of the instrument) in Alnwick Castle is entitled "Piper to the Duchess of Northumberland"; The estimated year of his birth is based on his apparent age in the portrait; Very few further details known.
