Wayland, John Smithwick

Born in Clonkelly [ESE of Dundrum, Co. Tipperary]; His Irish name was Seán Ó Faoláin, and he was also called Sean Whelan; The youngest of 10 siblings, and the only one "gifted with a musical ear", he was the founder, and later secretary, of the "Cork Pipers’ Club (Cumann na bPíobairí Corcaigh)", the oldest of its kind in the world, founded 1898 "for the purpose of arousing an interest in the Union bagpipes, there being at that time no pronounced sentiment in favor of reviving the long obsolete Warpipes"; He also played the Warpipes, and organised and directed one of the best Warpipe bands in Ireland; NB: ➺ DeLacy family, James Goodman, May McCarthy and Mollie Morrissey.
