Maciejowski, Jan

1862-1932

piper (&c.) mentioned by name

[Born and?] lived in Hala Boracza, near Żabnica [SSW of Żywiec]; An esteemed gajdziorz at Hala Boracza, in Żabnica and in Milówka, he received his Gajdy as a bequest after the death of his father-in-law, Jakub Kupczak, in whose place he started to play in the band in which Jakub’s son, violinist Wawrzyniec already played; Wawrzyniec was his brother-in-law, because Jan was married to Jakub’s daughter Anna, with whom he had twelve children; When Jan died, their son Wojciech inherited the Gajdy; Anna died in 1958, at the age of 92; According to Katarzyna & Maciej Szymonowiczowie, "the ancestors of the Maciejowskis and Kupczaks were the first settlers living in Hala Boracza. The Maciejowskis must have been wealthy farmers, who properly educated their son, because Jan received a post at the office of "wójt" Jankowski in Milówka [a "wójt" was a local chief [mayor] of a group of villages; ws]. It is even said that he was the vice-speaker, but he gave up his job, probably as a result of pressure on the Maciejowski family from some residents of the village".

Instrument: Gajdy śląskie
