Zogata, Jura [Jerzy]
1871-1917piper (&c.) mentioned by name
Born and lived in Jaworzynka [SW of Istebna, Poland (until 1921: Czechoslovakia)]; Son of Andrzej (?-?), he was the immediate continuator of the music tradition of the pipers of the Małyjurek family; Undoubtedly it was his grandfather Jura Małyjurek who taught him to play the Gajdy; When asked how the name Zogata is related to the Małyjurek family, Jura Zogata’s grandson Vladislav (*1931) told that his great-grandfather fancied one of the daughters of Jura Małyjurek, who lived in a "sałasz" [a Silesian mountaineers’ shelter; ws]; Having married the girl, "young Zogata", settled at the Małyjurek farm, as well; Thus, Andrzej Zogata entered the Małyjurek family of pipers; He himself was not a piper, however; It was only his son, Jura (who probably inherited his musical talent from his grandparents), who continued the line of the family of pipers of Jaworzynka. He eventually married a Jadwiga Małyjurek (who was NOT related to them) and they had six children: three daughters and three sons. One of them was Pavel* [➺ NB¹], the future famous piper, who was also taught to play the Gajdy by his great-grandfather [i.e. Jura Małyjurek; ws]; Before World War I, Jura Zogata, then a young father [Pavel* was born in January 1907; ws], went to America, where he worked in a mine; On some ill-fated day the family learned that he was killed in a mining accident in Montana (USA); Because Jura Małyjurek still lived in Jaworzynka, the local pipers’ tradition survived, however; *NB¹: In the Polish source Pavel's name is consistently spelt Paweł; NB²: ➺ Relationship between familes Małyjurek and Zogata.
