"Weselej byłoby, kiedy by były dudy"
"It would be merrier if there were a bagpipe"; According to Kubik this proverbial commonplace [?; klisza przysłowiowa] is "a reverberation [sic] of an anecdote from the time of Zygmunt [Sigismund] III", stating that "In the voivodeship Vilnius [at that time part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth; ws] there was a "starosta" [Latin: capitaneus; ws], bearing the name Duda. A clever scholar, he wanted to receive his estate in lease, and used the ambiguity of the noun defining also the commonly known instrument in order to draw the king’s attention to his life. The bold and at the same time clever concept, gained great publicity and was captured by the colloquial language".
