Shēng

The name Yù (literally: "taro" [Elephant ear (Colocasia esculenta), a root vegetable]), possibly refers to its tuber, the 山芋 (shānyù [sweet [literally: mountain (!)] potato]); According to Thrasher "a large shēng type encountered in "oracle bone" inscriptions dating from the 15th century BC"; According to Zhāng, "in ancient times the name for the large Shēng"; Wong defines it as "an ancient reed instrument that looked like, and was played in a manner similar to the shēng", informing us that "宋史 (Sòng Shĭ) notes, in his »乐志« (Yuè zhì [Music records/annals]), that "the yu typically had 36 reeds [i.e. pipes; ws] while the sheng had 13 or 19 reeds", that "Historically, studies have stated that instruments with 22, 23 or 36 reeds were classified as yu, but those with 19, 17 or 13 reeds [pipes] fell under the category of sheng" and that "The sheng and yu co-existed for a long time, but following the demise of the Song dynasty, the yu gradually lost its place"; According to Blench yu denoted a melody, and shēng a harmony instrument; NB: ➺ Cháo, Hé shēng, and U (Japan and Korea).
