Ricros describes it as "a drone, parallel to the Hautbois, with a conical bore and a double reed, very rarely wih a single reed (➺ Anches simples; »Blanc, p.603)", adding that "it is considered artificial, only used very rarely, usually stopped, especially used on small sizes (32 - 39), sometimes on 42, very rarely on 44, and never on larger types; Its pitch is that of the fundamental [i.e. the 2nd lowest tone] of the hautbois]"; NB: ➺ Chantarella (Chanter).
