Estive (m)

➺ remark(s) below
Cornemuse

From "stivare" [to press]; Mediaeval; According to Marcuse it is "believed to have been a form of bagpipe", after which she adds a few arguments why it couldn’t be (thus contradicting Sachs’ explanation in his »Reallexikon«), upon which Podnos, evading the discussion, simply qualifies the classification as "questionable, 13th century"; NB: John Henry van der Meer mentions an "Estive d’Esclavonnie", oddly referring to 14th century Jean Lefevre, in whose poem "La Vieille" the term "estive" occurs, indeed, but which in Van der Meer’s addition "d’Esclavonnie" is used only in combination with another old French term for bagpipe, "chevrecte d’Esclavonnie" (➺ Chevrecte), instead (➺ Timothy James McGee (ed.), »Instruments and their music in the Middle Ages« (London/New York, 2017)); I also encountered a reference to "As estives de Cornevaille" [Les cornemuses de Cornouaille [Brittany; ws]] in one of the verses in Huon de Méry; NB: ➺ Stiva, and Stîve (Germany).
