Wood types used
wood types, used in bagpipe making
The most common types are cherry (Prunus avium) and olive (Olea europæa), but other types are used, as well: plum (Prunus domestica), apricot (Prunus armeniaca), almond (Prunus mygdales), sorb/rowan/service tree (Sorbus domestica), maple (Acer pseudoplatanus) and boxwood (Buxus sempervirens); Gioielli states that he has seen Zampognas made of maple (Acer), wild pear (Pyrus pyraster), and rosewood (Dalbergia nigra), as well, and that "in practice, every type of wood considered suitable and available is used"; Instruments made of 1 type (preferably olive) or 2 types of wood (olive for the Fuso, cherry for the bell of the pipes) are considered the best.
