Bowl (usually ceramic), traditionally used for heating the area where the reeds of a Shō are attached, in order to prevent them from becoming too moist, which would render them mute; This is the reason why the Shō is not continuously played during a Gagaku performance; During the 20th century the use of an electric heater is introduced.
