NB¹: In my perception it is quite possible that the name is related to the term "Crwth" (i.e. the Welsh lyra), which, according to Merriam-Webster, "can also refer to a swelling or bulging body"; NB²: Also note the Proto-Celtic term "krottos"‎ (round object) as a possible root.
