Zampogna (f)

(with) definite article: la

Bagpipe, mouth-blown: 1 stock (double chanter + 2 drones) / no additional drones

Identical types: 19

Provinces Isernia and Campobasso; Still considered an accompanying instrument to the Ciaramella (shawm), but nowadays also used for solo playing; It is made in several sizes: 20 (commonly in C), 22 (B♭), 25 (A♭), 28 (F♯), 30 (E), and 32 (E♭), the intonation of which may vary (sometimes even more than a semitone) from instrument to instrument, and from maker to maker; The 25 is the most used in Scapoli, but the 28 is also fairly widespread; In San Polo Matese the 25 and 30 prevail; The 22 is now [i.e. 2005; ws] almost out of production; Some makers call it a 23, but it is said that this used to be a different size; A large Zampogna bassa is also made in Scapoli, but it is not used by any of the local pipers; The numbers given by the pipers of San Polo Matese used to be different from those used in the Mainarde region (today’s 25, 28, and 30 were called "cinquanta" [50], "ottanta" [80] (or "sessanta" [60] ?) and "novanta" [90], respectively; Its second drone (Mupo) has no bore and is therefore mute; NB¹: Note the discrepancy in names used on p.185 in »La Zampogna«, vol. I); NB²: ➺ Latium; NB³: ➺ Zampogna a chiave (Calabria).
