Gajda (f)
original: гајда
Bagpipe, mouth-blown: 2 stocks (a: single chanter / b: drone)
From Arabic غيدا (ghaidā [gentle]) ?; South Morava region (Јужно Поморавље / Južno Pomoravlje), i.e. the valley of the southernmost region of Serbia, bordering Macedonia (state): Jablanica; Leskovac [➺ NB³]; Lužnica; Nišava; [Južna (southern) Srbija; = Macedonia? (➺ Širola)]; NB¹: = Gaida (Greece), Gajda (Macedonia), Gajda [Gajde?] (Montenegro), and Gajde [a] (Albania) and [b] (Kosovo); NB²: homonyms, &c. (incl. Gaida and Gaita); NB³: According to Jakovljević this is the South Morava variant in G (adding that "players in south Serbia also use instruments pitched in B"); NB4: According to Vukosavljević it is, however, the Prilep version of the Macedonian-Southern Morava type, which occurs in 3 sizes: big/large, medium (which is the most widespread), and small калуп (kàlup [form/mould]).
Traditionally entirely made of шимшир (šimšir [boxwood (Buxus sempervirens)]), with elements of buffalo or ox horn; NB5: Based on the difference in construction of its chanter, Vukosavljević discerns a second variant, which he calls the Leskovac version (➺ Gajdanica).
